In Taiwan, there are over 10,000 temples, but BaoHu Temple Dimu (寶湖宮天地堂地母廟) stands out as one of the most unique and popular in Nantou Puli. This temple combines stunning architecture, spiritual significance, and beautiful natural surroundings. Known as the "Blue House" for its striking green-tiled roof, it’s a must-see destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable cultural experience. The temple is especially vibrant during Lunar New Year and Dimu Niangniang’s(地母娘娘) birthday celebrations, which are favorite times for locals to visit.

BaoHu Temple Dimu (寶湖宮天地堂地母廟)

BaoHu Temple Dimu is dedicated to Dimu Niangniang (地母娘娘), the goddess of earth(宇宙之母), revered as the protector of land, rivers, and mountains. Worshippers visit to seek blessings for peace, prosperity, and abundant harvests.

Established in 1947, the temple consists of five main halls:

  • Kun Yuan Hall (坤元殿): The central dedicated to Dimu Niangniang (地母娘娘).

  • Shen Nong Hall (神農殿): Located on the second level.

  • Qian Yuan Hall (乾元殿) Tai Yin Hall (太陰殿) Tai Yang Hall (太陽殿): Located on the highest level.

As you walk to the top, the temple offers a panoramic view of Nantou Puli, surrounded by lush green mountains. The serene environment and natural beauty make it a peaceful retreat for visitors. Also, the temple’s green roof tiles "Blue House", make it one of the most visually captivating structures in Nantou Puli.

How to Pray at BaoHu Temple Dimu

If you’re new to temple etiquette, here’s a simple guide. Temple staff are friendly and happy to help as well.

  1. Prepare Offerings

Bring fruits, cakes, tea, or flowers. These symbolize respect and gratitude.

  2. Enter the Temple

Use the right-hand entrance to step through the gate.

  3. Donation, Incense and Joss Paper

I normally place a small donation (e.g., NT$100) in the box. Then, light incense sticks and place the joss paper beside your offerings on the offering table.

  4. Prayer Steps

    - Start at the Dimu Altar (地母爐) in the central hall.

    - Proceed to Cheng Huang Hall (城隍廳) on the right.

    - Conclude at Fude Hall (福德廳) on the left.

  5. Draw Lots (Optional)

Use the Jiaobei (筊杯) to seek divine guidance. Temple staff can help interpret your fortune. Jiaobei (筊杯), also known as moon blocks, are used in pairs and thrown to seek guidance and determine the will of the gods.

  6. Burn Joss Paper

Finish your visit by offering joss paper with a final prayer of gratitude.
