Puli, a charming township in central Taiwan, is often overlooked by travelers heading to nearby tourist hotspots. But if you take the time to explore, you’ll discover that Puli is filled with natural beauty and local charm.
As a local born and raised in Puli, I invite you to slow down and spend a day or two exploring this beautiful township. Wander along scenic footpaths or cycle through these hidden water bamboo fields. Puli offers an authentic and laid-back travel experience you won’t want to miss.
Explore A Hidden Footpath in Puli
One of my favorite secret spots for an afternoon walk in Puli is a quiet footpath surrounded by lush countryside.
To find it, head to Longsheng Road (隆生路) and cross the ditch near the preschool (親子田幼稚園). Just past the preschool, you’ll find a footpath near the Puli Story House B&B (埔里故事館). This path leads you straight into Puli’s tranquil water bamboo fields.

As you walk, you’ll see the breathtaking views of water bamboo fields with majestic mountains. The scenery transforms throughout the day, but the golden hour is truly magical. During sunset, the fields glow in vivid green, bathed in golden light, while the mountains fade into layered shades of blue and purple.
A Chill Cycling Experience
I also recommend exploring the area by bike. Cycling through Puli’s countryside is a relaxing experience. The peaceful atmosphere, fresh air and stunning views make it a perfect way to immerse yourself in nature. It also makes me think of Bali but with cooler weather.
While cycling, don’t miss visiting the nearby BaoHu Dimu Temple (地母廟), a striking palace-style temple perched on a hill. The architecture is a must-see, and from the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Puli town.
What Is Water Bamboo?
Water bamboo (茭白筍) is one of Taiwan’s signature vegetables. About 90% of it is grown right here in Puli. Also known as “white lady’s leg” for its color and shape. Water bamboo is a nutritious vegetable containing rich fiber, Vitamin A, B1, C. It’s good for digestion and has a fresh, juicy flavor. There are so many ways to cook water bamboo: stir fried, boiled or grilled.
Fun fact: If you notice the sky over Puli glowing red or purple at night, it’s because of farmers use special lights to help the water bamboo grow.
Unlike crowded tourist spots, this footpath is good to connect with local and enjoy the beauty of nature. Whether walking or cycling past the water bamboo fields, with the majestic mountains in the background, the experience is both relaxing and inspiring.
So, next time you’re in Taiwan, don’t just pass through Puli, stay awhile and discover its hidden gems.
